Blueprint Safety Funds FY 2013

The Destination Safe Coalition has completed a process to fund proposals for public information and safety enforcement strategies in fiscal year 2013 that help reduce fatalities and serious injuries in the Kansas City region, based on high-priority areas identified in the Kansas City Regional Transportation Safety Blueprint. Destination Safe developed the blueprint, which outlines primary transportation safety issues and potential solutions.

The Coalition partners with the SafeKan and Missouri Arrive Alive campaigns and helps put statewide efforts into action on a local level, particularly those that address the priority transportation safety issues.

Eligible Safety Strategies

Strategies must address one or more of the six high-priority areas outlined in the Kansas City Regional Transportation Safety Blueprint:

1. Unbelted Motorists
2. Aggressive Drivers
3. Youth & Young Adults
4. Impaired Drivers
5. Pedestrians
6. Transportation Safety Data

NOTE: Funds cannot be used to produce materials for profit. Applicants are discouraged from submitting infrastructure projects such as roadway widening, improved signing, etc., since there are other sources available to implement such projects.

Eligible Applicants

Any nonprofit organization, jurisdiction, governmental entity, for-profit business, etc., is eligible to apply for funding. The project must take place in one of the counties or portions of counties within the boundaries of the Mid-America Regional Council or Missouri Department of Transportation Kansas City District.

Funding Sources

No funding guarantees have been made by either the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) or the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). Funding amounts are determined after the projects are recommended for funding.

Each year, the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety provides funding for regional safety coalitions to allocate for public information and safety enforcement projects in their geographic areas. For fiscal year 2013, the Destination Safe Coalition estimates that approximately $100,000 may be available for regional projects.

A portion of this funding will be allocated to support the Kansas City region’s aggressive driving campaign, and a portion will be allocated for the public information and education plan. The remaining balance will be available for regional projects through an open application process.

KDOT does not allocate a specific amount of funds for regional blueprint projects. However, the agency has funded several projects submitted to Destination Safe.

Deadline and Review Process

The Destination Safe Coalition will review submitted projects on May 30, 2012, at 9 a.m. at the Mid-America Regional Council, 600 Broadway, Suite 200, Kansas City, Mo. Project sponsors are encouraged to attend to discuss their proposed project and answer questions from Coalition members.
