  The professional organization for communications personnel in city and county government.

A

AAA Area Agencies on Aging
  Agencies designated by the state to coordinate programs and services for senior citizens. MARC’s Aging Department serves as the Area Agency on Aging for Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray counties in Missouri.
AASHTO American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials
  AASHTO is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing highway and transportation departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
ACF Administration for Children and Families
  Part of the US Department of Health and Human Services. Some of MARC's early learning efforts are funded by grants from ACF.
ADA Americans with Disabilities Act
  Federal legislation that ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation.
ADT Average Daily Traffic
AED Automated External Defibrillator
  Lightweight, portable devices that automatically analyze heart rhythms and determines if a shock is needed. MARC maintains an online database for AED owners to register their AEDs as required by Missouri and Kansas law.
AFV Alternative Fuel Vehicle
  Vehicle that runs on a fuel other than ordinary gasoline. Alternative fuels may have particularly desirable energy efficiency and pollution reduction features. Alternative fuels include compressed natural gas(CNG), alcohols, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and electricity.

CAA U.S. Clean Air Act of 1970 and Amendments (1990)
  The original Clean Air Act was passed in 1963, but our national air pollution control program is actually based on the 1970 version of the law. The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments are the most far-reaching revisions of the 1970 law. In this summary, we refer to the 1990 amendments as the 1990 Clean Air Act.

The plan is generally limited in scope to the area within MARC's approved metropolitan planning boundary, which encompasses all of Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson and Jackson counties, the southern portions of Platte and Clay counties, and the northern portion of Cass County.

  Standards established by the United States EPA that apply for outdoor air throughout the country. There are two types of NAAQS. Primary standards set limits to protect public health, and secondary standards set limits to protect public welfare.

NO2 is a criteria air pollutant, and may result in numerous adverse health effects.

  The REMI model is a 2000+ equation economic model of the Kansas City area used for forecasting and economic impact studies.
RFG Reformulated Gasoline
  Specially refined gasoline with low levels of smog-forming volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and low levels of hazardous air pollutants. The 1990 Clean Air Act requires sale of reformulated gasoline in the nine smoggiest areas. Reformulated gasolines were sold in several smoggy areas even before the 1990 Clean Air Act was passed.

State implementation plans are collections of the regulations used by a state to reduce air pollution. The Clean Air Act requires that EPA approve each state implementation plan. VMT Vehicle Miles Traveled
  The miles traveled by motor vehicles over a specified length of time (e.g., daily, monthly, or yearly) or over a specified road or transportation corridor.
VOC Volatile Organic Compounds
  Volatile chemicals that produce vapors readily at room temperature and normal atmospheric pressure. VOCs include gasoline, industrial chemicals such as benzene, solvents such as toluene and xylene, and tetrachloroethylene. Many volatile organic chemicals are also hazardous air pollutants.
